About

I am a special education teacher with a background in gardening and landscaping.  I worked as a landscaper and garden designer for five years before choosing to change careers to education.  While attaining my Master’s in Special Education (Learning Disabilities Program at Hunter College) I worked at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden as an instructor in the Children’s Garden, while also completing my thesis titled “Schoolyard Gardening:  Cultivating better outcomes for students with learning disabilities.” I am creating this blog, centering on school gardening activities, with two ambitions in mind.  First off, I am going through the files on an old computer and want to find a place to share the many gardening activities I have saved from when I taught children at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens.  Secondly, I am hoping that I will be able to create a schoolyard garden with my own class in the coming years, and I’d love to have a place to document and share that experience.  So for now, I will be posting activities as I come across them;  eventually, I will hopefully be able to document my own experience starting a schoolyard garden in my school.

Thanks for stopping by! I wish you the best on your garden. A lady here in Cincinnati does that with students at a local elementary school. http://grannysgardenschool.org/01-100-1-00-about-us-overview.html yours.

    1. Thanks for the link! It looks like an amazing place–I only wish I lived closer so I could really check it out–especially the outreach programs they offer to educate teachers about gardening with children. You are lucky to have such a great resource in your community!

Thank you so much. I was looking for ideas on how to teach pollination and you offered all of them and the resources where to find them. Thank you! It is brilliant!
